The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has granted Ambrose Alli University (AAU) in Ekpoma, Edo state, approval to admit students into its nursing programme.

Sunday Samuel, the acting varsity vice-chancellor, announced at a recent event that the intake for the 2024/2025 academic session will commence soon.

The VC said the admissions will begin with a specific quota of 120 students for a start.

Samuel said the management of the institution is still awaiting final approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC).

He added that the school will adhere strictly to the approved quota by the NUC to avoid previous mistakes.

The acting VC added that the wait for final approval also applies to resuming admissions into the Medicine and Surgery programme.

Samuel noted that the monthly subvention of the institution was increased to N500 million last November when the school hosted the visitor.

He also stated that Monday Okpebholo, the Edo governor, has directed the school management to reinstate all staff who were politically sacked by the defunct Special Intervention Team (SIT).

The vice-chancellor added that the university’s senate recently approved a policy aimed at enhancing efficiency and responsiveness in handling certificates and transcripts.

As a result, graduates now receive their certificates immediately after graduation, he said. He also noted that the longstanding issue with transcript applications has been resolved, with implementation ongoing to ensure satisfaction among alumni.

The VC said the College of Medicine has made significant progress in addressing inherited challenges, including the swearing-in for Set 18 and the 2020/2021 medical doctors session, the induction of 810 nurses, and solving the indexing and examinations issues for MLS students.

He also added that the state government has approved three major building projects for the university to include a 1,500-seater lecture theatre, a twin 300-capacity lecture theatre, and a 600-bed hostel.
