The Kano government has approved N6 billion for the construction of the Dansoshiya dam in Kiru LGA of the state.

In a statement on Wednesday, Ibrahim Adam, special adviser on information to Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano, said the project is his principal’s commitment to ensure food security in the state and the country as a whole.

Adam said the project is expected to have a far-reaching impact on the 44 LGAs of the state.

“Other states in Nigeria will also benefit from the resulting increase in commodity farm produce and mechanisation, similar to what is seen in Kura’s rice market and the Gafan agricultural hub,” he said.

“The Dansoshiya Dam, once completed, is projected to have a storage capacity of 3.1 billion litres of water.

“This initiative will not only empower our farmers but also enhance agricultural productivity, generate employment, and contribute to the state’s economic growth.”

Adam said about 1,000 hectares of land have been earmarked for irrigation, with 500 hectares slated for development in the initial phase of the project.

He added that about 3,000 farmers are expected to benefit from the irrigation scheme in the long run.

“While the project’s duration will depend on the terms agreed with the construction company, the nature of the work—particularly the need for intensive compaction and high engineering precision—requires sufficient time to ensure long-term durability and quality,” he said.

The special adviser said the project is one of the initiatives under Yusuf’s administration aimed at reviving Kano’s agricultural potential and expanding access to irrigation for year-round farming.
