Stanley Eguma, Rivers United head coach, has been released by his abductors.

The coach was kidnapped by unidentified gunmen on Monday along the Enugu axis while returning from Gombe state where his team had lost a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) game to Adamawa United last weekend.

On Friday, Okey Kpalukwu, the club’s general manager, took to the team’s WhatsApp platform to announce that Eguma has regained freedom.

“We are grateful to God for His mercy. Our Technical Manager, Stanley Eguma, has been released by his abductors. Our God is gracious,” he wrote.

The details of the head coach’s release from his abductors are, however, yet to be disclosed.

Kidnapping for ransom has become a major problem in Nigeria in recent years. Resistance to kidnapping often results in the deaths of victims.

Eguma is the longest-serving coach in the NPFL. He joined the now-defunct Dolphins FC in 2008.

After the state government merged Dolphins FC with Sharks FC in 2017 to form River United, he was retained as the head coach.
