Residents of Apo resettlement zone A in the federal capital territory (FCT), Abuja have pleaded with the FCT administration to construct the roads in the community.

In a letter written to Nyesom Wike, FCT minister,  Isaka Bappa, chairman of the residents’ association in the zone, said the roads have never been surfaced with asphalt, causing a series of hardships to users.

“Our city roads are full of potholes, some of which have become craters. These potholes are hazardous to motorists and pedestrians alike, as they increase the risk of accidents, falls, and possible injuries,” the letter reads.

“Indeed, driving at night is incredibly challenging and unsafe because of the dreadful roads.

“In cases of medical and critical emergencies, the condition of the roads constitutes eminent danger that could prevent the police and emergency responders from reaching distressed individuals promptly.

“Delayed response times can be fatal, and it is vital to give your immediate attention to our plight.

“The deterioration of our roads affects our daily commute, negatively impacts property values and overall quality of life within the community.”

The residents said the minister’s office should assist the community by “allocating funds for the surfacing of our roads with high-quality asphalt”.

According to the letter, the project for the construction of the roads was awarded 14 years ago but abandoned.

“The contract was awarded 14 years ago, and the prices of materials, diesel and labour have escalated to a point that the project has been abandoned,” the residents said.

“The name for the road refurbishment is ‘provision of infrastructure to APO Estate layout, Apo Abuja’ with Messrs CAT Construction Ltd being the contractor.”

“We, the residents, stand united in our request for a prompt resolution to these pressing matters. Our collective belief is that with your assistance and intervention, our roads will become safe and accessible to the benefit of the city and our entire community. We look forward to your favourable response and prompt action.”
