The United Nations will commemorate the 35th International Day of Older Persons (UNIDOP) on Wednesday, October 1.
In Nigeria, the celebration is scheduled to take place in Abuja, with events highlighting the vital roles older persons play globally and the challenges they face.
The event will take place at Suite 004, Sticks and Stones Plaza, 1245 Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, Wuse 2, Abuja, starting at midday.
Global Knights Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to advocating for vulnerable populations – especially the elderly – will join the international community in marking the occasion.

In a statement on Wednesday, Ngozi John-Uyah, executive director of the foundation, said the theme for this year’s celebration, “Older persons driving local and global actions: Our aspirations, our wellbeing and our rights,” will guide discussions on empowering older persons and addressing their needs.
The event will feature a keynote address by Musa Bawa of ABG, a mentalist, wellness coach, naturopath, and professional mind coach with over 30 years’ experience working with older persons.
Bawa is also the founder and chief happiness officer of the HALAL Wellness Club.

A panel discussion will follow, featuring notable figures, including Fred Ohwahwa, president of the Just Friends Club of Nigeria; Hajara Njidda Amoni, director of administration at the Made in Nigeria Project office, office of the secretary to the government of the federation (SGF); and Umma Umar Mohammed, manager of programmes at NTA headquarters.
Others are Emeka Kalu, national president of RATTAWU, and Ufuoma Omo-Obi, global health professional and managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) of West and Central Africa Health Options Ltd.
The foundation called on media professionals, policy advocates, development partners, and the public to participate in the dialogue and amplify the voices of older persons, advancing their rights, well-being, and aspirations.
