Adama wins Nigeria’s first swimming medal at world junior championship

Abdul Jabar Adama has won Nigeria’s first ever medal at the ongoing World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships in Romania.

Adama clocked 23.64 seconds on Saturday evening to win silver medal in the men’s 50m Butterfly event final at the Aquatics Complex in Otopeni.

He finished behind Dean Fearn of Great Britain who won gold medal with a time of 23.54 seconds.

The 17-year-old becomes the first ever Nigerian to win any medal in a global swimming event for either junior or senior categories.

Prior to the event’s final, Adama broke his Nigerian record of 23.81s twice, clocking 23.61s in the preliminary round, before posting 23.48s to qualify for the final.

A product of Mount Kelly Swimming Centre in the United Kingdom, Adama recently won two gold medals at the 16th Africa Junior Swimming Championships in Cairo, Egypt, held between April and May.

He outpaced his competitors in the 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle events to announce his burgeoning profile.

He is expected to continue his development towards becoming a medal hopeful at the 2028 Olympics.
