The school based management committee (SBMC) in Adamawa says it is set to begin a house-to-house advocacy exercise to ensure that all children in the state are enrolled in school.

According to NAN, Joel Jutum, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) education consultant in Adamawa, disclosed this on Friday.

Jutum said the house-to-house advocacy will be carried out in communities over the weekend, with a set target of enrolling 180,000 children for the 2021/2022 academic session.

The UNICEF coordinator explained that the exercise, which is in partnership with the Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board (ADSUBEB), is conducted annually to reduce the high level of out-of-school children in the state.

According to him, there will also be announcements in mosques and churches on the importance of enrolling children in schools.

He said free enrollment will continue in public primary schools throughout the first term of the new academic session.

Jutum said five out of 21 local government areas were targeted during a similar exercise conducted in 2020, with over 28,000 children gaining access to basic education during that period.

He added that ADSUBEB, the ministry of education and other critical stakeholders in the state are working as a team to ensure the success of the exercise in all 1,966 public primary and pre-primary schools across the state.
