The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kebbi has raised concern over the “growing incidents” of political thuggery and insecurity in the state.

Speaking at a press conference after a stakeholders’ meeting on Sunday in Birnin Kebbi, the ADC called on the federal and state governments, alongside security agencies, to take immediate and coordinated action to restore peace and stability.

The party’s call comes in the wake of fresh allegations by Abubakar Malami, former attorney general of the federation (AGF), that he and his team were attacked by armed political thugs during a wedding ceremony in Argungu, Kebbi state.

The ex-AGF claimed that the attackers, armed with dangerous weapons, stormed the venue from multiple directions and began making inciting remarks aimed at causing panic and violence.

Ibrahim Mohammed-Mera, a retired deputy comptroller-general of customs and ADC chieftain, who spoke on behalf of the party, said the meeting was convened to discuss the “deteriorating” security situation and the spread of “political thuggery” across the state.

Mohammed-Mera recalled a recent attack in Argungu, where thugs allegedly assaulted worshippers gathered for a wedding fatiha inside a mosque.

He said it was “unbecoming” for any political leader to sponsor or encourage such acts of violence, stressing that the ADC “condemns the incident in its entirety” and calls for peace and restraint.

The ADC chieftain lamented that “Kebbi is no longer safe”, citing the “killing” of a Nigerian soldier in Sakaba as evidence of the worsening insecurity.

“ADC notes with serious concern the alarming rise in insecurity within Kebbi and its adjoining communities,” he said.

“Cases of banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of criminality have continued unabated, leaving citizens traumatised, farmlands deserted, and economic activities in decline.

“This regrettable situation, if left unchecked, threatens the very fabric of our society and the peace that Kebbi has long been known for.

“The safety and welfare of the people must remain paramount.

“The ADC stands firmly with the people of Kebbi in demanding a more visible and effective security response that goes beyond rhetoric and focuses on tangible results.”

Mohammed-Mera also described the ADC as a “growing political force committed to democratic principles and peaceful engagement”.

He said the rising culture of intimidation, blackmail, and violence among some political actors undermines democratic values and casts a shadow over Nigeria’s political system.

Reaffirming the party’s commitment to “constructive dialogue and participatory democracy”, he said the ADC would continue to work with citizens to build a more secure and inclusive Kebbi.

The ADC chieftain also urged other political parties to unite with the ADC to “dislodge the incumbent at both state and national levels”, saying such collaboration would rekindle hope and help build a brighter future for Nigerians.
