The Cross River chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has suspended Usani Uguru Usani, national vice-chairman (south-south), over alleged anti-party activities and insubordination.

Usani was minister of Niger Delta affairs between November 2015 and May 2019.

The party said the decision was reached after its state working committee (SWC) meeting held on Wednesday, October 15.

In a statement on Friday, James Otudor, ADC state publicity secretary, said Usani’s recent conduct violated the party’s constitution and undermined its unity and progress across the south-south region.

“The State Working Committee, after reviewing petitions and credible reports from stakeholders, observed that Dr. Usani had in recent times engaged in anti-party activities, wilful insubordination to constituted party authority, and other acts capable of undermining the image, cohesion, and electoral prospects of the ADC,” the statement reads.

Otudor said the suspension takes immediate effect pending the outcome of an investigation and disciplinary process by the appropriate party organs.

The committee also faulted the appointment of Jackie Wayas as deputy national publicity secretary, saying the state leadership was not consulted.

It said Wayas’ disposition and loyalty “appear to be clearly skewed against the unity and growth of the ADC in Cross River State”.

The committee called on the party’s national leadership to review her appointment and replace her with “a competent, credible, and media-savvy individual from Cross River State who has a verifiable record of commitment to the ideals and progress of the party”.

On coalition members and party loyalty, the ADC expressed concern that some individuals who declared interest in joining the party months ago were yet to formalise their membership.

While recognising that the process of joining a political party is continuous, the committee said it will not tolerate dual membership or allow its platform to be used for multiple partisan interests.

It directed all coalition leaders and intending members to complete their membership registration at the ward level within seven days or risk exclusion from all leadership and decision-making activities in the party.

The chapter reaffirmed its loyalty to the national leadership, stressing that it remains united, focused, and committed to providing credible and people-centred leadership in Cross River and the south-south region.

“We urge all members to remain calm, law-abiding, and steadfast as the party’s internal mechanisms for discipline, justice, and accountability take their full course,” Otudor said.
