Ese Owie, Action Democratic Party (ADP) senatorial candidate in Edo south, says postponement of the elections should strengthen the determination of citizens in their bid to change the “trajectory” of Nigeria.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) postponed the polls in the early hours of Saturday, citing logistics challenge.
In a statement, Owie asked those in the district to exercise restraint over the rescheduled general election.
The former aide to Adams Oshiomhole, ex-governor of Edo, said measures should be put in place by INEC to ensure hitch-free elections beyond 2019.
“It should not weaken our resolve but rather bolster our determination to change the trajectory of Edo south and Nigeria,” the senatorial candidate said.
“This rescheduling calls for a post-mortem of INEC’s capacity as an electoral umpire and should ultimately evoke feasible, enduring and most effective initiatives for achieving a free, credible and transparent elections in Nigeria.
“Our collective focus should consequently be to positively influence the advancement of the nation’s electoral process and to ensure that adequate preparations are made to conduct hitch-free elections in 2019 and beyond.
“We must refrain from violence and remain mindful of the fact that our hopes and aspirations as a nation are primarily hinged on the evolution of our democracy into a viable instrument of social change by the transformation of its institutions and actors.”
Owie urged the Edo south people to come out en masse and vote him on February 23.
