AFCON: Three Algerian journalists ‘attacked, robbed’ outside Cameroon hotel

At least three Algerian journalists were reportedly attacked and robbed outside their hotel on Sunday night at the ongoing 2022 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.

According to an Arabian news outlet, two of the journalists sustained injuries as a bag containing money, a phone, and a computer was carted away by the unknown assailants.

It was gathered that the robbers attacked the journalists as they were about to leave their hotel.

In a statement on Monday, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said the police have begun an investigation to “understand the details of the incident” involving the three journalists.

“CAF is aware of an alleged incident involving three Algerian journalists in Douala, Cameroon on Sunday night, 09 January 2022. CAF is liaising with local government authorities to understand the details of the incident as this is now a Police investigation.

“We are also reaching out to the three journalists and wishes them speedy recovery.For now, we will await a detailed report of what transpired.

“The safety of each and every individual attending the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations is a priority for CAF and also our partners, the Cameroon government.”
