Africa records 244,055 COVID-19 cases, 111,254 recoveries

A total of 244,055 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Africa.

This is according to the data obtained from the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).

The report from the Africa CDC showed that as of 6pm on Monday, 6,546 deaths have been recorded in the region while 111,254 patients have recovered from the disease.

The data showed that Southern Africa accounts for the highest number of confirmed cases on the continent. A total of 73, 659 cases have been recorded in the region with 1,515 deaths.

This is followed closely by Northern Africa with 67,702 cases and 2,700 deaths, while Western Africa, the third-highest, has recorded 51, 507 cases and 959 deaths.

Eastern Africa has confirmed 26,997 cases with 829 deaths, while Central Africa has 24,190 cases with 543 deaths.

For recoveries, Southern Africa leads with 38,531, followed by Northern Africa with 28,710 while in Western Africa, 23, 368 people have recovered.

South Africa still has the highest number of infections with 70,038 cases, 1,480 deaths and 38,531.

Egypt, which has recorded the second-highest infection, has 44,598 cases, 1,575 deaths and 11,931 people have recorded.

In Nigeria, 16,085 cases have been confirmed with 420 deaths and 5,220 recoveries.

Ghana has so far recorded 11,964 cases, 54 deaths and 4,258 recoveries.

Algeria has recorded 10,919 cases, 767 deaths and 6,606 recoveries.

The data also showed countries with the lowest cases to include Lesotho, Seychelles, Gambia and Namibia.

Lesotho, which was the last country to record an infection on the continent has only confirmed four cases of COVID-19.

Two patients have recovered from the disease and no death has been recorded.

All the 11 confirmed cases in Seychelles have been discharged while Namibia has 32 cases and 17 recoveries.

Gambia has confirmed 28 cases, one death with 24 patients discharged.
