Agora Policy, a public policy think tank, will convene a dialogue to assess the progress and challenges of local government reforms, one year after the supreme court granted financial autonomy to LGAs.
The dialogue, themed ‘Local Governance Reforms a Year After Supreme Court’s Ruling’, will take place on July 22, 2025, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.
Agora Policy said the conversation is aimed at “dissecting the promise and the challenges of local governance reforms in Nigeria a year after the landmark ruling by the Supreme Court”.

The event will bring together government officials, civil society leaders, and development partners to reflect on the implementation of the landmark judgment.
On July 11, 2024, the supreme court ruled that the federal government must pay allocations directly to LGAs and barred state governors from appointing caretaker committees to run them.
The court also directed the federal government to withhold funds from LGAs headed by caretaker chairmen.

Lateef Fagbemi, attorney-general of the federation, had described the ruling as a decisive step in freeing the local government system “from the shackles of the past”.
Since the verdict, elections have been conducted across some LGAs to fill vacant council positions.
The event is supported by the MacArthur Foundation, in partnership with TheCable and the Centre for Fiscal Transparency and Integrity.
