A federal high court in Ilorin has granted bail to Abdulfatah Ahmed, former governor of Kwara state.

Ahmed, who was governor between May 2011 and May 2019, is standing trial on a 12-count charge over an alleged diversion of Kwara state funds worth N10 billion.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned the former governor on Friday after he was invited for questioning on Monday.

The money was alleged to have been diverted during Ahmed’s tenure as governor, and when he served as the commissioner for finance in the administration of former governor Bukola Saraki.

However, Ahmed pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Evelyn Anyadike, the presiding judge, granted him bail in the sum of N50 million and asked the former governor to two sureties with landed properties in Ilorin, Kwara state capital.

Kehinde Eleja, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), represented Ahmed.

Meanwhile, the judge adjourned the case to April 29 and 30.

The former governor was once quizzed in May 2021 by a crack team of operatives at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja over the same alleged offences.
