Air force sets up panel to probe ‘accidental’ killing of civilians in Yobe

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says it has started an investigation into the air strike that killed nine people in Buhari village, Yunusari LGA of Yobe state.

The jet was said to be targeting members of the Islamic State in West African Province (ISWAP) but accidentally hit the village on Wednesday.

Many other residents were also injured during the air strike.

In a statement on Thursday, Edward Gabkwet, NAF’s director of public relations and information, said a board of inquiry has been set up to “thoroughly” investigate the circumstances of the incident.

Meanwhile, Mai Mala Buni, governor of Yobe state, has commiserated with the families of the victims.

According to the statement issued by his office, Buni said the government will join hands with the security agencies to unravel the cause of the incident.

The governor directed his special adviser on security affairs to liaise with the Nigerian air force and the multi-national joint task force to look into the incident.

He also directed government hospitals in Geidam and Damaturu areas of the state to offer free medical services to those who sustained injuries in the disaster.
