AIU appeals Tobi Amusan’s doping violation clearance

AIU appeals Tobi Amusan’s doping violation clearance

The Athletics Integrity Unity (AIU) has filed an appeal against the disciplinary tribunal’s decision which cleared Tobi Amusan of anti-doping rule violation.

In July, AIU handed the Nigerian athlete a provisional suspension for allegedly “missing three tests in 12 months”.

Amusan case was transferred to a disciplinary tribunal. A month later, a “majority decision” of the disciplinary tribunal ruled that Amusan “has not committed an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV) of three whereabouts failures within a 12-month period”.

Following the ruling, AIU said the decision would be reviewed in detail after which it will decide whether to exercise its right of appeal.

In the latest development, AIU, in a post on its X account on Monday, said the appeal was filed before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) last Friday.

“The AIU filed an appeal last Friday (15 September 2023) with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the Disciplinary Tribunal’s decision, dated 17 August 2023, that Tobi Amusan did not commit an anti-doping rule violation for Whereabouts Failures,” the tweet reads.

“The AIU will make no further comment on the matter until the conclusion of the appeal.”

Amusan had endured a topsy-turvy 2023 season following the doping charge.

She failed to defend her title in the World Athletics Championship in Budapest, Hungary after she finished sixth in the final.

The 27-year-old, however, won the women’s 100 metres hurdles at the Diamond League final in Eugene, Oregon, US.
