Ajaero: Tinubu said he’s taking extra steps to tackle insecurity

Joe Ajaero, president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), says President Bola Tinubu assured labour leaders that he is taking “extra steps” to tackle the rising insecurity across the country.

The labour leaders met with the president at the State House on Tuesday as part of last-minute effort to prevent the nationwide protest called by the congress against the rising insecurity in the country.

Ajaero spoke in the early hours of Wednesday after a follow-up meeting with the federal government team led by Hope Uzodinma, the governor of Imo state and chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum.

The other governors, including Nasiru Idris of Kebbi, Monday Okpebholo of Edo, Usman Ododo of Kogi, and Nkiru Onyejeocha, minister of state for labour and employment, are members of the federal government team.

Ajaero said the labour leaders will brief members of the congress on the outcome of their discussions with the president and the team.

He quoted President Tinubu as assuring that insecurity will soon be a thing of the past in the country, adding that another meeting has been scheduled for January 2026 to iron out the grey areas.

“We will take whatever we discussed with them to our members,” Ajaero said.

“Mr President was emphatic that the issue of insecurity will be a thing of the past very soon and that he is taking extra steps to take care of it.

“We equally talked about financial insecurity. A worker who is not well fed and well paid will have more problems.

“The president said he has put Nigeria on the path of prosperity. We agreed that we will meet in January to look at some grey areas we need to touch, which will equally translate to the prosperity of the working class.”

Despite the series of meetings, the members of the labour union protested in Lagos and Abuja over the escalating insecurity in many parts of the country.
