Ajibade, Plumptre named in WAFCON group stage best XI

Rasheedat Ajibade and Ashleigh Plumptre are the only Super Falcons of Nigeria players named in the best eleven for the just concluded group stage of the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). 

The CAF Technical Study Group (TSG) unveiled the most outstanding list of players for each position on Wednesday.

Ajibade and Plumptre featured in all three group games for Nigeria. The Super Falcons defeated Tunisia 3-0 in their opening match before edging Botswana by a lone goal in their second game.

The team eventually finished the group with seven points after drawing Algeria in the final group game. Nigeria finished first in Group B and will face Zambia in the quarterfinal.

Three players in the Zambian team made the best eleven. Barbra Banda, the reigning CAF women’s player of the year, alongside Rachael Kundananji and defender Lushomo Mweemba.

Others are Refiloe Jane, Fikile Magama, Mbabanani Mbane of South Africa, Senegal’s Nguenar Ndiaye, Ghizlane Chebbak of Morocco and Algeria’s Chloé N’Gazi.

The Super Falcons will face Zambia on Friday.

Nigeria is hoping to win the country’s 10th WAFCON title.
