The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has launched a television commercial as part of its efforts to help subscribers against unsolicited text messages.

NCC, in a statement, said the television commercial will air on major national television networks and local television stations in all the states in Nigeria from March 26.

According to the statement, the commercial will feature Helen Paul, a comedian, and Ali Nuhu, a Kanywood actor.

Also featured in the television commercial is the 622 complaints platform, a toll free number operated by the NCC, where consumers whose complaints are not resolved by the service providers, can report to the commission for immediate resolution.

NCC had directed all service providers to, from July 1, 2016, activate the “DO NOT DISTURB” facility which gives subscribers the freedom to choose what messages to receive from the various networks, or simply text STOP to 2442 in any of the networks to deactivate all messages.

Umar Danbatta, executive vice-chairman of NCC, said telecommunications firms may pay over N16 billion to subscribers as compensation for sending unsolicited text messages to them.
