Amaechi: No difference between GEJ and Abacha

Despite the legal threat that the presidency issued against him, Rotimi Amaechi, governor of Rivers state, is not about to cease his continuous criticism of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Amaechi, whose estranged relationship with the president dates back to 2013, does not spare Jonathan anytime he has the opportunity to lampoon him publicly.

Speaking on Tuesday during a television programme on AIT, Amaechi compared some of the policies of Jonathan to those of Sani Abacha, a general and Nigeria’s former head of state who was to a large extent unpopular among the masses.

“You can compare this government to that of Abacha, what’s the difference? TAN is singing one million man march; during the time of Abacha, people were singing one million man march,” he said.

“You can also compare the use of the military under Abacha and how the president is now using the military against the people. Can you see the two? If I were to be an adviser to the president, I would have told him to watch history and be careful.”

Amaechi also revisited Soku oil well, which belonged to Rivers but is now a possession of Bayelsa state.

“The Soku oil well is gone – unless we have a new president who sets up an independent body to investigate the issue,” he said.

“But for now, the president is looking at this issue from the eyes of a Bayelsa man.”

Amaechi, who refused to comment about his 2015 political ambition, said he was focused on ending his tenure on a good note.

“I cannot continue forever; someone has to take over in May,” he said.

“I am focusing on finishing and finishing strong. Whoever wants to succeed me, I leave that to God and I wish him well.”
