Amina Mohammed, deputy secretary-general of the United Nations (UN), says she has tested positive for COVID.

She announced this on Tuesday in a post on Twitter, noting that she is currently in isolation.

“I have tested positive for COVID-19. Grateful to be one of the privileged to have been vaccinated as I think of the millions still without protection. Let us continue to push for vaccines leaving no one behind,” she wrote.

“Happy to continue online in isolation, my full commitment to the #TransformingEducation Pre-Summit.”

Although the UN deputy secretary-general did not give clues as to how and where she contracted the virus, she had recently attended the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Kigali, Rwanda.

She has previously spoken about the COVID pandemic and its impact on women and girls.

She also joins the list of notable personalities who have recently tested positive for the virus.

Anthony Fauci, the chief medical adviser to US President Joe Biden, had tested positive for COVID days ago.

Also, Queen Elizabeth II of England, former US president Barack Obama, US Vice-President Kamala Harris, and Bill Gates, billionaire businessman, all tested positive for COVID earlier in 2022.

Since 2019 when the virus first emerged, countries around the world have continued to record COVID infections, although several nations have reported a significant decrease in case counts.

Many countries have also lifted COVID protocol such as wearing of masks.

In Nigeria, however, there seems to be a new surge in cases as 243 COVID infections were recorded on Saturday — the highest number of cases since March 13.
