Amr Fahmy, former secretary general of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has died after a protracted illness.

Fahmy’s death was announced on Sunday by the confederation on its official Twitter handle. He died at the age of 36.

“We would like to express our deepest condolences on the passing of former CAF General Secretary Amr Famy who passed away on Sunday, 23 February 2020, in Cairo, Egypt, after a short illness,” said a statement issued by CAF statement.

“It is with great deal of sadness and emotions that we received the shock news.

“On behalf of CAF, we extend our deepest condolences to his family especially his parents, his spouse and daughter.

“Our thoughts are with you at this difficult moment, and may God have mercy on his soul.”

Amr was not the first member of his family to serve in the CAF. Mourad Fahmy, his grandfather, and Moustafa Fahmy, his father, also served as general secretaries from 1961 to 1982 and from 1982 to 2010 respectively.

Fahmy was appointed as CAF’s secretary general in November 2017, replacing Moroccan Hicham El Amrani.

He spent barely two years in office before he was sacked after he accused Ahmad Ahmad, president of CAF, of bribery and misuse of funds.

Mouad Hajji of Morocco would later replace him as the secretary general of CAF.
