The Anambra police command has announced a crackdown on unlawful assembly in the state.
The directive follows intelligence reports that the Neo-Black Movement of Africa may “attempt to carry out cult initiations and reprisals against rival groups on July 7”.
Ikioye Orutugu, commissioner of police, said these activities typically occur in student-populated areas, prompting increased security presence.
Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson of the Anambra police command, said in a statement that the Schools Protection Squad (SPS), an initiative launched by Kayode Egbetokun, inspector general of police, to safeguard educational institutions and students, has been directed to take proactive measures.

He said Orutugu appealed to hoteliers, lounge owners, and operators of studio apartments to refuse hosting any events linked to cult activities.
“This follows the security intelligence-led policing and community information that suggests that the Neo-Black Movement of Africa may use today 7th of July 2025 to execute plans that could lead to serious public disorder, including cult initiations and reprisals against rival cult groups in the State,” the statement reads.
“The CP noted that these criminal activities happen within student-populated areas, and stepped up the security deployment with the School Protection Squad directing the Operatives of the Command to be on the offensive.”

Ikenga said covert operations have been intensified at motor parks, commercial tricycle stands, and other identified hotspots to prevent any disturbances.
He said residents should remain vigilant and report suspicious activities or gatherings to local area commanders or divisional police officers.
