Shedrack Azubuike, chairman of Orumba South LGA of Anambra state, has asked mothers to immunise their children against polio.

Speaking at the National Immunisation Plus Days (NIPDs) flag-off in Orumba South on Friday, he encouraged residents to join the polio vaccination campaign which begins on May 3, 2025.

Azubuike said immunisation safeguards children from polio’s devastating effects — including deformity and death.

“According to health experts, immunisation is a vital step in boosting the health and immunity of our children in the community,” he said.

“I appeal to parents, especially mothers, to allow their children to be vaccinated during this period and protect them from polio virus.”

The chairman noted that Chukwuma Soludo, governor of Anambra, is doing everything to protect our children, and “it is our responsibility as parents and caregivers to support this cause”.

Chisom Uchem, executive secretary of Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency, explained that the free, safe, and effective vaccine targets children aged zero to 59 months.

She highlighted its role in preventing poliomyelitis, a deadly disease that can cripple or kill. Uchem urged parents to seize this opportunity to secure their children’s health.

Azubuike reiterated that a simple, harmless immunisation could spare children from polio’s lifelong consequences.

Local leaders and health officials are mobilising to ensure success of the vaccination campaign.
