Anichebe: When I play well West Brom play well

Anichebe: When I play well West Brom play well

That’s the claim of West Bromwich Albion forward, Victor Anichebe, whose Barclays Premier League goals have cost WBA £1 million apiece.

The 27-year-old has scored six goals in just 22 league starts since his £6 million move from Everton on deadline day in August 2013.

He scored a finely placed header at Newcastle in the 1-1 draw on Saturday and the Super Eagles of Nigeria forgotten-man says there’s more to him than goals.

“It is always nice to score but whether I score or not it is always about the team,” he told Birmingham Mail.

“If the team do well and as long as I can contribute to that, then I am happy. I am not one that is always talking about goal-scoring and all this kind of stuff – I leave that to Saido (Berahino).

“But I will always help and whenever I play well I think that the team plays well as well. I can bring a lot of people into the game and if I score, great, and if I don’t… whatever. I’m happy and hopefully we can push on.”

Anichebe’s goal at Newcastle was from a well worked out free-kick routine.

“That is something that the manager works on all the time,” he said.

“I think everyone knows he is big on set pieces, he is big on organisation and stuff. It’s always good to see something that we have worked on in the training ground came off in the game.”

West Brom meet Chelsea and Arsenal in their last two league games of the season and the striker is not ready to relax his scoring form.

“It is good to score but we are not just going to stop here. We are going to carry on for the last two games.

“We’ve got two really good teams and we can go out and enjoy and express ourselves and hopefully we can get two really good results and that can push us on for next season.

“The manager wouldn’t let us (relax). We need to see the job through against Chelsea and Arsenal and we can show people what we can really do.

“It’s not about playing for the sake of it, we’ve got a really good chance to take some points from the last two games and make ourselves proud and make the whole club and the fans proud. We will work hard this week and try and put two performances together.”
