Blessing Agbomhere, zonal secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the south-south, says nobody will be allowed to impose a candidate as governor of Edo in the next election.

The election will take place in 2024.

Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo, is completing his constitutionally permissible second term in office.

In the build-up to the last governorship election in the state, Adams Oshiomhole, a former APC national chairman and current senator, backed Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who went on to lose to Obaseki.

In a statement on Friday, Agbomhere said governorship hopefuls in the party should not bother seeking the party’s ticket if they are not ready to abide by the APC zoning arrangement in the state.

The national working committee (NWC) member said even though hopefuls from Edo north and south senatorial districts are eligible to contest, it is the people that will decide who they want to lead them.

“The APC will ensure that the spirit of justice, fairness and equity are considered to foster the brotherhood that has existed between the Binis, Esans and Afenmais who have continued to stand on a tripod all these years to ensure a united and peaceful state,” he said.

“No one individual will sit in the comfort of his bedroom to impose a candidate on Edo people.

“Edo people will choose their governor from among the aspirants, and the candidate to be chosen must have an untainted record of patriotism, sacrifice and service to the community.”
