Abdullahi Ganduje, governor of Kano state, has accepted the resignation of Hafiz Abubakar, his former deputy.
In the acceptance letter dated August 6, Ganduje said he had appealed to the members of the state house of assembly to drop plans to impeach Abubakar.
The ex-deputy resigned on Saturday after he was said to have been tip off on the impeachment plot.
An ally of Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of the state who recently dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) and returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abubakar had said he was resigning as a result of “irreconcilable differences” between them.
Accepting his resignation, the governor denied disrespecting Abubakar’s office as deputy governor.
He said: “Your Excellency I was surprised with your assertion that I disrespected the office of the deputy governor when you well know that in the three years we worked together you have fully deputized me and even acted as the governor in my absence. In the periods you acted, I have never interfered nor annulled any decision you took in that capacity.
“Despite your recent public and uncomplimentary utterances on my person. I allowed you to continue chairing the state executive council meeting held last week Tuesday when I had to attend an official engagement outside the state.
“You might have been aware that members of the state house of assembly have already gathered enough signatures and many impeachable offences against you and had wanted initiating impeachment process today Monday August 6, 2018, but with your resignation letter dated August 4, 2018 (a Saturday) I have already appealed to them to drop the process and they have so obliged.”
He added that while respecting Abubakar’s decision to resign, “I wish you well as you return to the university where you are more familiar with and perform better.”
