Applications for Chevening scholarship for 2021/2022 academic session is set to commence on September 3.

The Chevening scholarship is an international scholarship scheme which enables students with leadership and networking skills from 144 countries and territories to undertake postgraduate study or courses in universities in the United Kingdom.

The announcement was made via the Chevening awards’ verified Twitter account on Monday.

According to the post, the application period is shorter than usual due to the coronavirus pandemic, and will take place within a period of two months — September 3 to November 3.

“We are pleased to announce that applications for 2021/2022 Chevening Scholarships will open on 3 September and close on 3 November. Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19, the application window is shorter than usual,” the tweet read.

Since 1983, over 50,000 professionals have studied in the UK through the programme.

More than 1,400 Nigerians have benefited from Chevening scholarships and fellowships, including Simon Kolawole, CEO of TheCable; Okey Nwuke, deputy managing director of Coscharis Group; Amina Oyagbola, a lawyer; Kenneth Amaeshi of the University of Edinburgh, and Herbert Wigwe, CEO of Access Bank.

In 2018, Theresa May, former prime minister of the UK, announced additional 100 Chevening scholarship slots for African students — about 30 percent increase at the time.
