The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) has announced call for applications for the second edition of its Excellence in Journalism Awards.
The awards, which form part of CJID’s commitment to strengthening independent media that drives accountability and sustainable development, invite entries from journalists, fact-checkers and media organisations.
Participants based in Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, Senegal, Ivory Coast are eligible to apply.
The centre said the award is aimed at recognising outstanding contributions to journalism, fact-checking, and media innovation across West Africa.

Eligible works must demonstrate excellence, innovation, and a commitment to the media’s role in fostering an inclusive and accountable society.
This year’s award ceremony will be held in November 2025 in Abuja as part of the organisation’s annual Media and Development Conference.
Categories for the 2025 edition include best gact-check in West Africa, best health reporting, best climate change reporting, best solutions journalism reporting, best community reporting, best reporting on sexual and gender-based biolence (SGBV), and best reporting on social accountability.

In addition, CJID has introduced a new ‘Editor of the Year Award’ to spotlight newsroom leaders whose behind-the-scenes contributions shape impactful storytelling.
The award will recognise editors nominated by journalists for their vision, leadership, and editorial guidance, with both journalist nominations and editor self-assessments considered in the selection process.
According to the eligibility criteria, submissions must be original works published or broadcast between September 1, 2024 and August 31, 2025.
The deadline for entries is September 30, 2025.
