Organisers of the All-Nigeria universities debating championship (ANUDC) have opened registration for the 12th edition.
In a statement signed by Ahmed Lawal, the ANUDC assistant general secretary, on Monday, the event will take place from August 24 to 30 at the University of Ilorin, Kwara state.
Lawal said the 12th edition, themed around democracy, artificial intelligence, climate change, and gender equality, promises to be the most inclusive yet.
“When the first All-Nigeria Universities Debating Championship (ANUDC) was held at the University of Calabar in October 2013, no one could have predicted the intellectual movement it would spark,” he said.

“Now, a decade later, it has become Nigeria’s premier stage for undergraduates to sharpen their minds, engage national issues, and prove the power of ideas over noise.
“This isn’t just about winning trophies. It’s about building leaders: young Nigerians who can stand in any room, home or abroad, and hold their ground.
“The championship will feature debate rounds, a public speaking contest, and the ultimate Naija challenge (quiz competition).

“Join other leading institutions in showcasing excellence, critical thinking, and eloquence. Institutional registration is now open; secure your team’s slot today and lead them to national recognition.”
The assistant general secretary noted that since inception, ANUDC has engaged over 200 universities, trained over 1,500 student debaters, and produced alumni in various fields, including law, politics, diplomacy, media, technology, and civic organisations.
For 2025, Lawal said the initiative seeks sponsorship as a legacy investment in Nigeria’s future leaders.
Abdul-Lateef Owoade, president of the ANUDC, said debating is more than extracurricular, noting that it is nation-building in action.

“We must invest in minds the way we invest in reality shows as Nigeria’s future depends on it,” Owoade said.
