The European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) says April 2025 was the second-hottest April on record globally.

The report, which was released on Thursday, said last month was 0.07°C cooler than the warmest April in 2024, and 0.07°C hotter than the third warmest in 2016.

C3S said April 2025 was the 21st month in a 22-month period for which the global average surface air temperature was more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

“April 2025 was 0.60°C warmer than the 1991-2020 average for April with an absolute surface air temperature of 14.96°C,” the report said.

The EU climate service added that only five months (January-March 2016 and January-February 2020) had previously been above the 1.5°C level.

Last month was the second-warmest April globally, with an average ERA5 surface air temperature of 14.96°C, which is 0.60°C above the 1991-2020 average for April, according to the report.

“Only five months (January-March 2016 and January-February 2020) had previously been above the 1.5°C level. 14 of the last 22 months, from September 2023 to April 2024, and from October 2024 to March 2025, were substantially above 1.5°C, ranging from 1.58°C to 1.78°C,” C3S added.

“However, the values for May, June, August and September 2024, as well as those for July and August 2023 and April 2025, were very close to 1.5°C (between 1.50°C and 1.54°C).”

The EU’s climate service had earlier stated that 2024 was the hottest year on record.
