Army extends shooting training in Rivers, tells residents not to panic

The Nigerian army’s 6 division has extended its shooting training in Elele community in Ikwerre LGA, Rivers state.

The training is a routine exercise carried out by the military.

Charles Ekeocha, the division’s spokesperson, on Thursday, said the exercise has been extended till July 10.

According to him, the shooting practice which commenced on June 13 was earlier scheduled to end on June 27, but had to be extended by two weeks.

“The exercise is being conducted at the Army Shooting Range in Elele, Ikwerre local government area in Rivers,” he said.

“Members of the public,  especially residents of Elele community and environs, are therefore advised to keep away from the general shooting area.

“Residents are advised not to panic on hearing sounds of gunshots and movement of troops in the area.”

The shooting exercise is aimed at improving the proficiency of troops in the use of firearms.

The troops of the division are part of the army’s operation Delta Safe.

The operation seeks to protect oil pipelines in the Niger Delta and also provide a check on the activities of the militants.
