Mahmud Mohammed, chief justice of Nigeria (CJN), has described the arrest of judges by the Department of State Services (DSS) as “distressing” and “unfortunate”.

He thanked the Nigeria Bar Association, which condemned the DSS raids.

The DSS had on Saturday raided the homes of some judges across the country on allegations of corruption.

But speaking on Monday at a valedictory session held in honour for Sulieman Galadinma, a justice of the supreme court, Mohammed called for prayers and appealed to Nigerians to remain calm over the matter.

He said an emergency meeting of the National Judicial Council (NJC) scheduled for Tuesday would examine the matter comprehensively.

“It is indeed very saddening and deeply regrettable, the distressing and unfortunate incident which occurred on Friday 7 October and Saturday 8 October, 2016,” he said.

“However, I must ask all Nigerians to remain calm and prayerful, as emergency meeting of the National Judicial Council, which will take place tomorrow, will comprehensively look into the matter.

“Furthermore, I must express my sincere appreciation to the executive of the Nigerian Bar Association ably led by the President, Abubakar B. Mahmoud and indeed all members of the legal profession for their prompt action and continued support.”

It is very sadden to hear that Chief judges of the federation was not in support of our govrrnmrnt effortd in dealing with corrupt judges.magistrates. other legal profeddionals within our legal system. It is about time for all loving Nigerians to rise up against the few corrupt infividuals among us and retake our country back. The cj and NBA must be joined in this noble effort.
