Aruna Quadri becomes first African to reach quarter-final of WTT championships

Quadri Aruna has defeated Sweden’s Kristian Karlsson to qualify for the quarter-final of the 2021 World Table Tennis (WTT) championship.

Aruna continued his scintillating performance at the championship with a 4-3 victory over Karlsson on Saturday morning at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas.

Consequently, he became the first-ever African table tennis player to book a quarter-final place in WTTF championship history.

The world number 19 won the first set 11-9, while the Swedish player claimed the second with 6-11.

The Nigerian star won the third set 11-9 but went on to lose the fourth and fifth sets 5-11, 10-12 to Karlsson.

Aruna had to dig deep to rally back into the game by clinching the sixth and seventh sets 11-9, 11-6 respectively.

He will battle another Swedish player, Truls Moregard, for the semi-final place on Sunday morning.
