The house of representatives says it will intervene and ensure the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are met.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Wednesday protested at the national assembly, calling for an end to the ongoing ASUU strike.

The protesters marched from Unity Fountain — from which they converged in the federal capital territory (FCT) — to the national assembly.

The goal of the nationwide demonstration, which started on Tuesday, is to put pressure on the government to fulfil its promises to ASUU.

At the plenary session on Wednesday, Muhammad Wudil, a lawmaker from Kano state, said the concerns of ASUU will be addressed.

“We assured them that the national assembly, most especially the house of reps is the last bus stop of the common man and also the national assembly is the symbol of democracy,” he said during plenary — after leading six members to liaise with the protesters.

“I promised them that the house of reps will bring all these concerns to the table.”

In his response, Idris Wase, deputy speaker who presided over the plenary, said the leadership of the house will intervene and act “promptly” on their demands.

“We assure that by the grace of God the leadership will wade into it and act promptly and we are going to do justice to all their demands,” he said.
