Atlético Madrid’s new stadium Wanda Metropolitano will host the 2019 Champions League final on 1 June of that year.

Madrid has chosen ahead of Baku, the only other candidate in the running to stage the match, Uefa announced on Wednesday.

Baku’s Olympic Stadium will instead stage the Europa League final, while the Besiktas Stadium in Istanbul will stage that year’s Super Cup.

The Spanish side bade farewell to the history-steeped Vicente Calderon at the end of last season and made their bow at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday beating Malaga 1-0 inside the 68,000-seater stadiuk.

The name for the new stadium comes from the investors – ‘Wanda’ – and also Atletico’s first permanent stadium, the Stadium Metropolitano de Madrid, which they played in from 1923-66.
