The Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Thursday confirmed that former Chelsea manager Avram Grant is the new coach of the Black Stars after agreeing a 27-month contract.

The 59-year-old Israeli will lead Ghana to January’s Africa Cup of Nations finals in Equatorial Guinea.

Grant replaces Maxwell Konadu, who had been in temporary charge since the September departure Kwesi Appiah, who led the Black Stars at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Speaking at a press conference at the Ghana FA’s headquarters in Accra, President Kwesi Nyantakyi revealed that he had set the Israeli a target of “doing well” at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea while aiming to win the 2017 edition.

“Grant needs time to know the players very well so we can’t ask him to win the Nations Cup. That would be unrealistic,” he said.

He will start work on Monday and his contract will finish at the end of February 2017 – after that year’s Africa Cup of Nations finals.

The former Portsmouth coach has only six weeks to prepare the Black Stars for the 2015 AFCON.
