Umaru Bago, governor of Niger, has ordered the release of 25 persons arrested over a protest against economic hardship in the state.

Some residents on Monday blocked the Kpakunku road in Minna, Niger state capital, to protest the rising cost of living in the country.

In a statement signed by Wasiu Abiodun, police spokesperson in the state, the protesters were arrested for “organising a violent protest”.

Those arrested were three women, including Aisha Jibril, the suspected initiator of the protest, and 22 men.

Speaking during a media conference on Thursday, Binta Mamman, Niger state commissioner for information and strategy, said there was a mix-up in the arrest of the protesters.

Mamman said the police had to arrest the protesters when the demonstration turned violent, adding that they were released after a thorough review of the case.

“The state government has directed the release of Aisha Jibrin and 24 others arrested by the police for leading the protest. They have been released and reunited with their families,”NAN quoted Mamman as saying.

“They did not seek the permission of the police before embarking on the protest.

“It was determined that there was a misunderstanding, and they have been exonerated of any wrongdoing.

“We understand the importance of ensuring that justice is served and we are dedicated to maintain the highest standard of fairness and transparency in all legal matters.”

The commissioner said the government was aware of the current hardship in the country noting that violent protest was not the solution.

“We are part of the society; so we know what is happening and how the people feel,” she added.

“We know that our people are hungry and there is hardship in the land and that is why the government is working hard to provide palliatives to cushion the hardship.”
