Bayelsa Queens crowned NWFL champions for sixth time

Bayelsa Queens crowned NWFL champions

Bayelsa Queens were crowned champions of Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) on Saturday after a thumping 4-1 win over Naija Ratels at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne.

On the final day of the NWFL Super Six playoffs, the Prosperity Girls dominated the winless Ratels to finish the six-team championship play-off tourney with 10 points to seal first place, and with it the title.

Bayelsa Queens jumped from second on the log to snatch the title from Nasarawa Amazons and Edo Queens who both played out a goalless draw.

Playing with the knowledge that only a win can give the side a shot at the title, Bayelsa Queens took the lead in the 24th minute through Vera Samuel. They were however pegged back by the Ratels in the 42nd minute as Tumininu Adeshina’s goal evened the encounter going into the break.

It took only two minutes after the break for the Queens to reclaim the lead, with Mega Cynthia putting them ahead, before Samuel scored twice in six minutes to complete her hat-trick and seal the dominant win.

The striker made it 3-1 on 61 minutes before adding another goal on 67 minutes.

The final whistle and confirmation of goalless draw between their rivals sent the team into celebration mode.

Bamidele Abiodun, wife of the Ogun state governor, presented the trophy to the winners, alongside NWFL board members and other dignitaries.

Bayelsa Queens’ title win earned the team the N10 million grand prize. They will represent Nigeria at the CAF Women’s Champions League zonal qualifiers in Côte d’Ivoire, where they have the chance to advance into the group stage of next season’s competition.
