The BBC News Pidgin has launched a new essay writing competition for Pidgin language speakers.
The competition which was launched on a Monday is open to students of any tertiary institution in Africa.
Entrants for the award are to submit an essay of between 800 and 1000 words on the theme, “Is Africa’s youth ready for political leadership”
In a statement, the BBC said all essays must adhere to Pidgin English structure while conforming to all rules of grammar and punctuation.
It added that a winner, who will be announced at an event in Lagos on September 15, 2018, will receive a one-year scholarship covering the costs of academic books.
Entry to the contest opens on Monday, August 6, 2018 and closes on September 2, 2018. Entries are to be submitted here.
Adejuwon Soyinka, editor of BBC News Pidgin, said: “This Pidgin essay competition is the first for the region from an international broadcaster and the competition aims to encourage the uptake of written Pidgin across West and Central Africa.”
