President Muhammadu Buhari has advised the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to be professional during the 2023 elections.

He said this on Monday at a retreat for senior police officers, held at Owerri, the Imo capital.

Speaking at the event with the theme ‘The Imperative of A Nigeria Police Strategic Plan for Peaceful Elections’, Buhari urged the police to be loyal to the democratic values of the country.

“I charge you to continue to project a force that will remain apolitical, firm, and loyal to our democratic values in the countdown to the 2023 general elections,” he said.

“It is only by so doing that our police can truly redefined, not just the true friend of the citizens but defendable and trustworthy partners in the drive to advance our democratic values.

“Elections are local. It is only when the votes truly count that the faith of the citizens in that democratic process can be demonstrated and government legitimacy is assured.

“This can vastly guarantee through how we police this election and security operation that is impartial, firm and professional.
