The suspension of burial ceremonies in Benin, Edo state, has now been officially lifted.

Funerals in Benin Kingdom were put on hold in order to bury the former Oba of Benin, Omo n’Oba n’Edo Uku Akpolopkolo Erediauwa on June 9.

41 days after the conclusion of funeral rites, His Royal Highness, Eheneden Erediauwa, has announced the resumption of burials, through the Benin Traditional Council.

The council informed journalists on Monday that the crown prince decided to lift the suspension to ease the “anxieties” among residents of the state, who needed to bury their dead.

Chief Sam Igbe, spokesman for the council and Iyase of Benin, stated that the permission would last until further notice.

“He (crown prince) is with them in their anxieties and has graciously granted permission until further notice for them to carry out the necessary burial ceremony.”

He further noted that information on the expected coronation ceremony of the new Oba will soon be published.
