Benue assembly: We didn’t pass bill against love, romance

The Benue house of assembly has denied reports that it has passed a bill against love and romance in the state.

NAN reports that Alfred Berger, chairman of the house committee on informationspoke to journalists in Makurdi, Benue state capital, on Wednesday.

Berger urged the public to disregard the fake news circulating on social media.

There had been reports on social media that the house passed a bill banning love and romance in Benue.

But the committee chairman said no such bill was before the assembly, adding that lawmakers had not even contemplated it.

He explained that the purported document was written in a manner inconsistent with the legislative style of the assembly.

Berger said the claim was a fabrication and the product of the author’s imagination.

Meanwhile, he commended Hyacinth Alia, governor of Benue, for acting on the resolutions of the assembly recommending suspension of some government officials.

He said the house had recommended six months’ suspension for Grace Adagba, chairperson of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB); Maxwell Ogiri, chairperson of Otukpo LGA; and Michael Uper, executive secretary of the Benue State Lottery Commission.

Berger noted that the governor reduced the suspension to one month each.

He said the assembly is not concerned about the duration of the suspension but wants the concerned officials to vacate their offices while investigations are ongoing.
