American rapper Big Sean has just earned his first No. 1 album on the US billboard 200 with the best sales week of any album he has ever released.
He was all smiles in a video he posted on Instagram, expressing appreciation to all his fans and those who bought the album. He also tweeted “Thank u guys for an amazing week and giving me my 1st #1 album, the support means everything. Truly Blessed!”
The artiste’s third album, Dark Sky Paradise, which was released under G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam Records on February 24, 2015, sold 173,000 copies in its debut week ending March 1, according to Nielsen Music.
The album’s success was boosted by hit singles off the album, I Don’t F*** with you and the song Blessings featuring Drake and Kanye West. The album was executive-produced by Kanye.
Kid Rock’s 8th studio album, ‘First Kiss’, follows at No.2 album in the US, moving a combined 146, 000 units in its first week of release also on February 24.
Movie soundtrack for Fifty Shades of Grey is at No. 3 in its third week, while Drake’s If You Are Reading This It’s Too late mixtape is at No.5 and Taylor Swifts’ 1989 is at no. 6
Twenty-six-year-old Sean was signed to Kanye’s GOOD Music in 2007 after trailing him to a radio station where he was scheduled for an interview.
He begged West to listen to him freestyle, and he was reluctantly given a chance.
“As we get to the entrance of the radio station … we stopped in the middle of the doorway. He starts looking at me and bobbing his head,” Big Sean said in an interview with Mixedtape Daily.”
After the freestyle, Sean left West his demo tape and he was signed two years later.
After a number of mixtapes, Sean released his debut album titled ‘Finally Famous’ in June 2011, and his second studio album ‘Hall of Fame’ on August 27, 2013.
He was the recipient of BET’s Best New Artiste award in 2012, and Billboard’s Top Rap Song of 2013 for Mercy also featuring Kanye West, Pusha T, and 2 Chainz with a fleeting appearance by Nigeria’s very own D’banj.
Big Sean performed in Nigeria at the 2012 edition of D’banj’s Koko concert and also featured in the song, Blame it on the Money.
