A bill seeking to regulate food vending business in Nigeria has passed the second reading at the house of representatives. 

The bill aims to establish the food vendors registration council of Nigeria with the responsibility to register, train and ensure the safe practice of raw and cooked food vending businesses in the country. Nigeria.

The proposed legislation also seeks to prevent double taxation collection on members of the council by unauthorised bodies.

The bill is sponsored by Mohammed Monguno, an All Progressives Congress (APC) member, representing Monguno/Marte/Nganzai federal constituency of Borno state.

Food vendors are convenient and accessible means of getting food. However, there are potential dangers associated with food vending unhygienic practices which may lead to contamination and the spread of foodborne illnesses.

Also, improper handling, storage, and preparation of food vending pose significant health hazards to consumers.

In his lead debate, Monguno said the main purpose of the bill is to regulate persons dealing with raw and cooked food for the public and to ensure that hygiene is properly observed in the process of storing raw food and in the cooking process.

“The essence of observing hygiene in the cooking process cannot be overemphasised given our health system. This bill will strengthen the system for the better,” he said.

The legislator said the council would be funded by private sources and would not rely on financial assistance from the government. Rather, the council would focus on establishing methods to maintain its financial stability.

The bill received unanimous approval after Femi Gbajabiamila, the presiding officer, put it to a voice vote.
