The national power grid has collapsed twice within the last 24 hours causing blackouts in most states across the country.

A daily report from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed a system collapse on Wednesday which reduced load allocations to the distribution companies.

The collapse came after the grid recorded 4,212 megawatts on Wednesday morning.

Bode Fadipe, spokesperson of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), later confirmed that allocation has improved.

“Allocation to AEDC has improved. We now have 70MW hence we are able to pick the following feeders H23, H35, H7 and H11 from AT3, FDR 2 and FDR 3 from AT5, DAM FDR from AT4, L36 and L31 from Kukwaba Ts,” Fadipe said.

“We are instructed to maintain station service in most of our injection substations. We shall continue to brief the public as the system continue to improve and stabilise.”

However, on Thursday morning, the power grid was reported to have suffered another collapse around 5:29am.

“Another system collapse occurred this morning. 5:29am precisely. AEDC is currently on zero allocation,” Fadipe stated.

The recent grid collapse is the sixth to be recorded in 2019.

In January, the country’s power grid collapsed twice. Also in April, there was at least two major collapses, which had worsened power supply in most parts of the country.
