Insurgents ‘kill eight soldiers’ in Yobe

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have reportedly killed eight soldiers in Sassawa village, Damaturu local government area of Yobe state.

According to Daily Trust, the insurgents came to the village in five Hilux vans around 6:00pm on Tuesday.

They were said to have immediately opened fire on the soldiers, killing eight of them and injuring others.

A resident of the village was quoted as saying the insurgents broke into shops and took away food items.

“The boys (Boko Haram) had a field day. After the attack, they forced many shops and stores open and carted food items away,” he said.

Kayode Ogunsanya, spokesman of 3 division military base in Damaturu, said there was casualty on both sides but he could not ascertain the number.

“There was casualty on both sides but I cannot ascertain the number. Men on ground had repelled the attack,” Ogunsanya said.

The attack is the fourth on the town and the military formation in the area since the establishment of the base in Sassawa.

Sassawa is 37 kilometres away from Damaturu, Yobe state capital.
