Boko Haram razes ‘100 houses’ in Maiduguri

At least 100 houses were razed during a Boko Haram attack in Mammanti village, Maiduguri, Borno state on Wednesday night.

Muhammed Mammanti, village head of the community, said many residents fled when insurgents attacked the town.

“When they came, they dropped their bicycles and crossed over the big hole sorrounding the town,” he said.

“The villagers took to their heels when they heard gunshots. Two people were injured while one 25 year old civilian JTF was killed. He died while trying to rescue some of his animals.”

Mammanti added that the villagers had lost all they had, saying the insurgent burnt more than 80 percent of the houses in the village.

Confirming the incident on its Twitter handle on Thursday, the Nigerian army said “Just before midnight on 14th November, 2018, pocket of BHTs sneaked into Mammanti village along Damboa Road in Borno state, fired some shots to scare the inhabitants and set some houses ablaze.

“Frustrated by the current military deployments which has made most towns and villages impenetrable in the North-East, the BHTs have resorted to arson of make shift houses in remote settlements.

“Troops from 251 Task Force Battalion were quickly mobilized to engage the BHTs who fled in disarray. However, 2 civilians were wounded and have been evacuated to a nearby hospital for treatment. Exploitation of the area is ongoing.”
