The Borno Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri says it has recorded 28 severe cases of Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) so far this year.

Laraba Bello, chief medical director of the hospital, made the disclosure while receiving relief materials donated by the Nigeria Airforce Officers Wives Association (NAFOWA).

Bello said that the patients were mostly members of vulnerable groups who had no one to cater for them.

“The donation is timely as it will go a long way in alleviating the plight of our patients, most of who are between the ages 17 and 20 years,” she said.

“Some of them have been here since last year while some are internally displaced persons abandoned by their husbands.”

VVF is an extended hole between the vagina and the bladder, causing the continuous involuntary discharge of urine into the vaginal vault.

It is usually caused by long, unrelieved or obstructed labour, poorly done abortions and these are mostly socio-economic issues of poor health facilities.

Young girls who get pregnant and have kids while the pelvis is not fully formed are at high risk of VVF.
