Air force jet crashes in Niger state

An air force jet has reportedly crashed in a community in Borgu LGA of Niger state.

Lapai TV, an online television network in the state, posted a video of the incident on its Facebook page on Saturday.

Two pilots reportedly escaped from the aircraft before it crashed near Karabonde community.

According to the publication, the crash was caused by a mechanical fault, and the pilots ejected before impact.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has not issued an official statement on the incident. Meanwhile, this is not the first Nigerian Air Force (NAF) jet crash.

In 2023, a NAF trainer aircraft crashed in Makurdi, the Benue state capital. Although no deaths were recorded, the two pilots on board were injured and hospitalised.

In 2021, a fighter jet deployed to fight Boko Haram insurgents lost radar contact and crashed in Borno State.

Another air force aircraft crashed in Kaduna in 2017.

Olatokunbo Adesanya, the then director of public relations and information, confirmed that one of the organisation’s pilot instructors was killed in the crash.

In 2015, an air force’s Dornier-228 aircraft with call sign NAF030 crashed into Ribadu Cantonment (Old NDA) in Kaduna state, killing all seven passengers on board.
